FCC sells out again!
While surfing my morning news I ran into this... and my heart sank.
Why is it every time anything comes up that would HELP the regular Joe Schmoe on the street we always watch the 'big money' move in and corrupt or destroy it and in the end the general public has to pay more for everything?
Who could possibly think this is a good idea? We are handing over the wireless broadband to AT&T and Verizon and basically saying "Do whatever you want!"
This 'deregulation' and allowing companies to do whatever they feel like is what we just watched happen with the banking system in America. Have we not learned anything from that fiasco?
In a few months/years when people see their internet bills go through the roof - just to enjoy the same bandwidth and freedoms we had until today - everyone is going to start screaming and complaining about this and it will be too late.
Absolutely and unquestionably the WORST thing that has happened since the Patriot Act and I am betting we'll hardly see anything on the news about it at all.

All rights reserved to ABC News of course... just in case they freak out.
Which made me think of a few things, I'll just list them as separate issues and let you, the reader, come to your own conclusions.
#1 - You have colleges every year raising tuition and boarding costs and book costs and adding fees "technology fee" "access fee" "pay a fee fee". So you can try and mortgage away your parents life... or ensure you are at least 15 years in debt right out of school from "school loans"... or you learn how to tear a guys limb off and beat him to death with it all while wearing a football helmet and get a FREE RIDE through college?! Hell, show me the limb!
So, now you are in college... taking "Sports Education" or "Physical Therapy" or whatever crap the college has named it's "Lets ease the football jocks through a free Bachelors Degree major" but you have to win games to make the school money right? So... work out a lot, maybe hit a few 'extra' pills or shots to 'help you along'... Whatever it takes to make sure you have that spectacular hit that sends the other guys helmet flying off (with his head still inside) that will get replayed on Sports Center 50-60 times the next week. Those replays garner interest in you and your team... maybe a couple extra TV games on a major broadcaster?
#2 - NFL... Everyone knows just about every player that puts his foot on the playing field during an actual game is likely making at least $1,000,000.00 a year right? If you are a starter... you are definitely making over $5,000,000.00 a year... and some of these guys are making tens of millions a year for being a 'superstar' or 'franchise' player right? Where does this money come from? Fans buy stuff, but advertisers give out HUGE money to make sure their commercials or endorsements are on or around players or during the 'big games' with 'big hitters' and 'big scorers'.
#3 - You get a bunch of overpaid, self indulgent, ego inflated, testosterone laden essentially bullies on a field together and someone is going to have to prove to someone else that their dick is the biggest... and now you get an overly aggressive hit, a 'dirty hit' that is hairline against the rules (but only if your caught) etc...
More rules? Nope... just going to cause games to get longer and longer...
I think you need to suspend players, without a review or appeal... 1 game each time they do an illegal hit. A fine the equivalent to 15 minutes on the field isn't a deterrent, it's a inconvenience... a suspension costing them 1/20 of their salary EACH time they get suspended from a game? Now THAT will make someone think when they see their bottom line at the end of the year!

Capitalism & Net Neutrality
Big "Net Neutrality" debates going on at the moment... during a very intelligent debate I was able to have with a couple of people I spent about 5 hours of work time formulating this response (in between calls, clients, and paperwork)
As much as people like to think that capitalism and the 'free market' are such great and wonderful things, taken to their logical conclusion it is a disaster for almost everyone. The end result of any completely successful capitalistic system is for one person to own everything and everyone else to be his serf.
People and, by extension, the companies they run have a tendency to degenerate into vehicles for extracting the maximum profit in the minimum amount of time and to hell with the consequences. While ultimately an unsustainable, the collateral damage can be substantial. We've been reminded of this with the recent 'crash' of our financial markets and the current "2nd Great Depression".
One of the primary purposes of the government is to regulate and to temper the worst excesses of capitalism. To provide a basic level of protection for its people and to provide the rules for the game of economic activity and enforce them to the betterment of society as a whole. If that means that a small number of people at the top have a little less so that the rest of the people suffer a little less, then they are doing their job. Of course this brings cries of "Socialism!" immediately to the lips of those at the top...
Unfortunately America has joined many other countries in forgetting this. Of course the ironic part is that the current state of affairs is ultimately self defeating. In the drive for just a couple of million more this quarter we've completely destroyed the virtuous cycle.
Virtuous Cycle:
1) Workers make decent money ->
2) Money is available to spend ->
3) More things are bought ->
4) More factories, etc, are needed to make more stuff ->
5) Workers (and the companies) make even more money ....
6) Rinse and repeat...
The people who run the companies make decent profit through out. A little less in the short term, but sustainable and so total profits are much higher over time.
What we are stuck in is the vicious cycle.
Vicious cycle:
1) Workers make less money ->
2) Less money available to spend ->
3) Less things are bought ->
4) Less factories, etc, needed to produce less and less ->
5) Companies slash payrolls to the bone ->
6) Rinse and repeat until multiple millions of jobs are lost... sound familiar?
The people who run the companies (and said stock holders) make a larger amount in the short term, but it's unsustainable and the entire economy sinks into recession, depression and collapse.
What I find pathetic is that the people in charge know this. We have gotten to the point that we don't actually make things anymore.
That's the fiction that is intellectual property. We are buying and selling 'ideas'. It is more accurate to say that the people in power are using the law to force other people to pay them for imaginary things. What is a patent if not the right to use an idea? What's copyright, the right to make a copy of something yourself? It's not like people are fighting for the right to have someone else make them more copies of something for free -> they just want to be left alone to use what they already have as they see fit. Even worse... now they want you to pay them if you want to sing a song that you composed based on another song you heard?
"Intellectual Property Rights" is about transferring money from people who do stuff and make stuff, into the pockets of people who don't make or do anything but had the money to buy the right to a certain thing.
On the topic of Net Neutrality as the issue we are debating:
Net neutrality legislation is needed desperately. Not the false, short sighted, "let those in power squeeze the 'golden goose' just a little tighter" mess we'll probably end up with, but real long term forward thinking, fair legislation.
Things it needs to contain:
1) Networks are a natural monopoly, anyone should be able to compete over the same wires. If you don't want to be in the business then get out of it. Compete by offering the most reliable, fasted network at the most reasonable price.
2) People should get what they are paying for. No 'up to' bullshit, no fuzzy 'acceptable use policy' crap, no talk of 'bandwidth limits'. If you sell them a 6MB connection then don't complain if they actually use 6MB.
3) Treat every destination equally. Everyone's a server or a client. The reason the internet's been such a boon is the availability of practically anyone to be seen, to develop innovative applications, etc.
4) If you are going to 'prioritize' then that has to be the user's choice NOT the company that's providing access. Not Comcast favoring their video over some other internet video site. Not AT&T favoring their VOIP over a third party VOIP. Especially nothing favoring company A's content over company B's just because company A's giving the ISP a bucket of money.
5) If you're an ISP, your customer's data is just that, their data. No SNOOPING. You want to do something, it's strictly"OPT IN" not "We'll do this, bury it in fine print... but give you the option to opt out if you ever find out we are doing it... which we'll try as hard as we can to prevent". If you can't convince people to sign up then it probably isn't something they want in the first place!

Dr. Laura... how I hate thee.
I read this, and about died laughing.. best thing EVER for these bible thumping, holier than thou assholes like Dr. Laura! These people cherry pick passages from the bible and demand everyone lives by these codes.
Dr. Laura Schlessinger is a US radio personality who dispenses advice to people who call in to her radio show. Recently, she said that homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22, and cannot be condoned under any circumstance. The following is an open letter to Dr. Laura penned by a US resident, which was posted on the Internet. It's funny, as well as informative:
Dear Dr. Laura:
Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. ... End of debate.
I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the other specific laws and how to follow them.
1. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1: 9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15: 19-24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.
4. Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?
5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?
6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?
7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?
8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?
9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? -Lev.24:10-16- Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)
I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.
Your devoted disciple and adoring fan.

Bullshit Alert!!
http://torrentfreak.com/hollywood-gets-injunction-to-disconnect-the-pirate-bay-100512/
This makes me sick...
Lets ignore the fact that the movie industry still feels it is necessary to pay an actor 20 million dollars for 4 months worth of work on a movie...
Lets ignore the fact that Hollywood spends 300 million dollars on CGI effects and production on movies that have already been made 2-5 times already in the past... Rambo, Robin Hood, Friday 13th, Halloween, Chainsaw Massacre... we could name movies all day right?
Lets ignore the fact that even as torrenting movies increases... so have their profits from box office tickets...
Lets ignore the fact that just MAYBE people torrenting the movies eventually go and buy the Bluray or DVD...
Lets ignore the fact that (as independent record labels are showing) if you put value added information or 'extras' into a Bluray or DVD people will buy them... or the fact the public is fleeced over and over for the same movie (original, directors cut, special edition, special edition directors cut, unrated versions, limited edition, anniversary edition, etc etc) and people STILL buy more than one copy...
Or my personal favorite... that movie studios put DRM on their discs... and then blame the manufacturer of the players for the inability of a disc to play on every player out there... Requiring (as recently reported last week) that people get forced into connecting their dvd or bluray players to the internet to download more and more 'drivers' for more and more DRM crap put onto movies to make sure you never get to make a copy of it - because god forbid they lose a $5 profit off of a sold DVD or Bluray!!
Then they have the gall to put advertisements on their discs about how you as the consumer downloading a movie will cause babies to starve, and people to be put out on the streets to deal drugs and shoot innocent people because the studios will be forced out of business all from a downloaded movie.. OH MY GOD WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!
Then, to put the cherry on top... now Blurays and DVD's have COMMERCIALS!! I know anyone who has bought a movie in the past 2 years has noticed commercials for TV shows on them right? Thats right folks.. you are paying the studios for the privilege of watching their commercials for their own movies.. PLUS commercials for TV shows you may or may not even watch or care anything about.
Ahh! got to love American Greed baby!!

General Motors New Campaign
So hey!!... I see GM has a new commercial out where they brag about the fact that they paid back their loan! Well woopity freaking doo!
So, does anyone remember the fact that they asked for a bail out TWICE? So... anyone wanna guess where they came up with the money to pay back their (ahem.. FIRST) loan? Doh! you guessed right!... all they did was shift the debt from the first loan to the second loan... used the second loan plus some interest from it to pay the government back.
So now they can pretend to be all out of debt and free to make cars America really wants to walk past on their way to the Volkswagen Dealership... or Honda dealership... or maybe even a Toyota dealership (brave souls)
GM = FAIL... but, unfortunately for most uninformed Americans... they'll get away with the lies... too bad.

Quitting Smoking
SO yah... April 21st 2010 @ 4:00 PM EST I decided to quit smoking.
If you have never started smoking - don't start!
If you already smoke - don't quit!!
This "cold turkey" bullshit is beyond explaining how impossible it is to think straight, function, etc etc... this sucks with a capital SUCK.
Somehow I think I'll survive... if nothing else I'll maybe have a smoke every now and then.... or try some nic gum or patches... possibly that SNUS shit they have from Camel... something to take the edge off when I need a stress reliever.

April Fools...
Yah, so... survived April Fools Day.
Now it's "Good Friday" which is basically just another reason for banks and government employees to take a day off.
My big question is... if we have this separation of church and state thing... why are all the religious, quasi religious, and whatever holidays always the perfect time for banks and government to take the day off?
I mean shit... Congress has "recess" more often than my 6yr old daughter does... and she doesn't get paid $100,000+ a year to go to school!
